A volte i cristalli di un minerale crescono sulla cima di cristalli di un minerale diverso, producendo una crescita eccessiva. Nella maggior parte dei casi resta possibile vedere la forma di questi cristalli, anche se possono essere stati completamente coperti o disciolti. Questo esemplare mostra ametista crescere su cristalli di calcite.

Sometimes crystals of one mineral grow on top of crystals of a different mineral, producing an overgrowth. In most cases, you can still see the shape of the crystals that were overgrown, even though they may have been completely covered or dissolved. This specimen shows amethyst growing over calcite crystals.
