Hai notato la differenza? La Luna piena di questa sera è la più piccola Luna piena dell’anno, un “apogeo lunare”, ovvero fino al 14% più piccola e con il 30% in meno di luminosità rispetto ad altre lune piene del 2014.
Questa piccola Luna piena produce ancora moltissima luce, come ci mostra questa foto scattata il 14 gennaio da Neil Winston di Lusby, nel Maryland. “La nebbia era presente in quanto la temperatura è scesa dopo qualche pioggia”, dice Winston. “La luminosa luna ha lanciato raggi distinti di luce attraverso i rami degli alberi.” Le Lune piene variano in dimensione e luminosità a causa della forma ovale dell’orbita della Luna. La Luna segue un percorso ellittico attorno alla Terra con un lato (“apogeo”) a circa 50 mila chilometri più lontano rispetto agli altri (“perigeo”). Le grandi lune piene sul lato perigeo dell’orbita della Luna sono invece spesso chiamate “Superlune”. Ciò renderebbe la luna piena di stasera un “anti-Superluna”. “Kryptonite”, forse!”

Such a reduced full Moon still produces a lot of light, as shown in this photo taken on Apogee’s Eve (Jan. 14) by Neil Winston of Lusby, Maryland. “Fog rolled in as the temperature dropped after some rainfall,” says Winston. “The bright moon cast distinct rays of light through gaps in the trees.” Full Moons vary in size and brightness because of the oval shape of the Moon’s orbit. The Moon follows an elliptical path around Earth with one side (“apogee”) about 50,000 km farther than the other (“perigee”). Big full Moons on the perigee side of the Moon’s orbit are sometimes called “Supermoons.” That would make tonight’s full Moon an “anti-Supermoon” or perhaps, “kryptonite.”
