Quando la maggior parte delle persone sente parlare di una imminente “doccia” di meteore, potrebbe far pensare ad un cielo pieno di stelle cadenti che cadono come pioggia, ma purtroppo tale spettacolo non pare essere nelle previsioni per le Leonidi, il cui picco è atteso per questo fine settimana.
Tali tempeste di meteoriti hanno infatti una lunga storia che le ha rese famose come le stelle cadenti di novembre. Ad esempio, nel 1833 e nel 1966 sono stati osservati tassi di meteore nella misura di decine di migliaia all’ora. In anni più recenti, in particolare del 1999, 2001 e 2002, si sono invece contate poche migliaia di meteore per ora. Tali spettacoli celesti che hanno regalato alle Leonidi la nomea di stelle cadenti del secolo, con tutte le aspettative che le accompagnano, sono ancora ricordate da molti, ma pare opportuno rilevare che ogni ipotesi di una spettacolare esibizione da parte delle Leonidi quest’anno è, per usare un eufemismo, troppo ottimista.
When most people hear of an impending meteor shower, it might call to mind a sky filled with shooting stars pouring down through the sky like rain, but that is not in the cards for the Leonid meteor shower peaking this weekend.
Such meteor storms have indeed occurred with the famous November Leonids. For instance, in 1833 and 1966 meteor rates of tens of thousands per hour were observed. In more recent years, most notably 1999, 2001 and 2002, lesser Leonid displays of up to a few thousand meteors per hour took place. Those turn-of-the-century Leonid showers — and their accompanying hype — are still remembered by many, but it is important to note that any suggestion of a spectacular Leonid display this year is, to put it mildly, overly optimistic.
