ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) — il progetto astronomico da terra più grande del mondo — sarà inaugurato il 13 marzo 2013, segnando il passaggio dal progetto di costruzione all’osservatorio completamente funzionale. Per permettere a chiunque in tutto il mondo di seguire direttamente questa tappa significativa della ricerca umana verso la comprensione del cosmo, l’inaugurazione, a 2900 metri di altitudine sulle Ande cilene, verrà trasmessa – grazie all’Operations Support Facility dell’osservatorio – in live streaming.

Lo streaming degli eventi della giornata sarà trasmesso dalle 15:30 CET (14:30 UT) alle 17:00 CET (16:00 UT) circa. Lo streaming sarà disponibile su www.almaobservatory.org/inauguration. Il Presidente del Cile, Sebastián Piñera, celebrerà il successo del progetto insieme ad un centinaio di altri ospiti, tra cui rappresentanti della comunità scientifica globale, nuovi e vecchi membri del personale di ALMA ed anche delle comunità locali. Verranno inoltre presentati i più recenti risultati di questo osservatorio all’avanguardia.

Ulteriori informazioni – L’Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), una struttura astronomica internazionale, è il frutto di una collaborazione tra Europa, Nord America ed Asia orientale e la Repubblica del Cile. ALMA è finanziata dall’Organizzazione Europea per la Ricerca Astronomica nell’Emisfero Australe (ESO) per conto europeo, dalla National Science Foundation (NSF) degli Stati Uniti in collaborazione con il Consiglio Nazionale della Ricerca del Canada (NRC) ed il Consiglio Nazionale della Ricerca di Taiwan per il Nord America, dagli National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) del Giappone in collaborazione con l’Academia Sinica (AS) di Taiwan per l’Asia orientale. La costruzione e la gestione di ALMA sono dirette da ESO per l’Europa, dal National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) per il Nord America e dal National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) per l’Asia orientale. Insieme queste organizzazioni formano il Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO), che sovrintende la costruzione e le operazioni che riguardano ALMA.

On 13 March 2013 the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) — the largest ground-based astronomical project in the world — will be inaugurated, marking the transition from construction project to fully fledged observatory. To enable people around the world to witness first-hand this exciting milestone in humanity’s quest to understand the cosmos, a live video stream of the inauguration will be webcast from the observatory’s Operations Support Facility, at an altitude of 2900 metres in the Chilean Andes. The stream of the day’s events will run from 14:30 UT to around 16:00 UT. 

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, along with hundreds of guests including representatives from the global scientific community, current and former ALMA personnel and its executives, as well as the communities located near ALMA, will celebrate the success of the project. The latest results from this state-of-the-art observatory will also be presented.
