La Regione Attiva AR1944, che ha prodotto di recente già diversi brillamenti di forte intensità, è tornata da un giro intorno al sole durato un paio di settimane. Il suo ritorno è stato annunciato da un solar flare di classe M come si può vedere nell’immagine scattata dal Solar Dynamics Observatory.
Come è consuetudine, le macchie solari che ritornano dopo avere compiuto il ciclo intorno al sole, sono rinominate. La nuova denominazione di AR1944 è ora AR1967: così verrà chiamata d’ora in poi. Nonostante AR 1967 sia decaduta durante la sua assenza, ha mantenuto una notevole potenza. Il NOAA prevede possibilità pari al 5% per il verificarsi di solar flare di classe X, mentre si sale al 50% per brillamenti di classe M. In ogni cosa, vista l’attuale posizione della macchia solare, posta sul limbo ovest della nostra stella, ogni brillamento non dovrebbe interessare il nostro Pianeta, che rimarrebbe fuori traiettoria.

According to tradition, sunspots that circle around the farside of the sun and re-appear are re-numbered. The new name of AR1944 is AR1967. That’s how we shall refer to it from now on. Although AR1967 decayed during its absence, it is still potent. NOAA forecasters estimate a 5% chance of X-flares and a 50% chance of M-flares on Jan. 28th. Explosions probably won’t be Earth-directed, however, because the active region is still near the sun’s southeastern limb.
