Diecimila anni fa, prima dell’alba della storia umana, una nuova luce sarebbe improvvisamente apparsa nel cielo notturno per poi dissolversi poche settimane dopo. Oggi sappiamo che quella luce proveniva da una supernova, una stella che è esplosa, la cui nube di detriti in espansione conosciamo come la Nebulosa Velo, ciò che resta della supernova.
Questa visione telescopica è centrata sul segmento occidentale della Nebulosa Velo catalogata come NGC 6960, ma meno formalmente conosciuta come Nebulosa, “Scopa della Strega”. Risultato della catastrofica esplosione, l’onda d’urto interstellare solca lo spazio spazzando emozionante materiale interstellare. Ripreso con filtri a banda stretta, i filamenti incandescenti sono come lunghe increspature in un foglio visto quasi sul bordo, molto ben separati in idrogeno atomico (rosso) e ossigeno (blu-verde), i gas che li compongono. Il resto della supernova si trova a circa 1.400 anni luce di distanza verso la costellazione del Cigno. La scopa di questa strega si estende in realtà a circa 35 anni luce. La stella luminosa nel quadro è 52 Cygni, visibile ad occhio nudo da un luogo buio, ma non correlato all’antica resto di supernova.
Ten thousand years ago, before the dawn of recorded human history, a new light would have suddenly have appeared in the night sky and faded after a few weeks. Today we know this light was from a supernova, or exploding star, and record the expanding debris cloud as the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant.
This sharp telescopic view is centered on a western segment of the Veil Nebula cataloged as NGC 6960 but less formally known as the Witch’s Broom Nebula. Blasted out in the cataclysmic explosion, the interstellar shock wave plows through space sweeping up and exciting interstellar material. Imaged with narrow band filters, the glowing filaments are like long ripples in a sheet seen almost edge on, remarkably well separated into atomic hydrogen (red) and oxygen (blue-green) gas. The complete supernova remnant lies about 1400 light-years away towards the constellation Cygnus. This Witch’s Broom actually spans about 35 light-years. The bright star in the frame is 52 Cygni, visible with the unaided eye from a dark location but unrelated to the ancient supernova remnant.
