Astronomers using a NASA space telescope have discovered an alien planet smaller than Earth orbiting a star that is right on our cosmic doorstep. But the world, which is two-thirds the size of our own planet, is unlikely to be home to life – it is hotter than hell with a surface that may be covered with molten lava. The new planet, with the uncatchy label UCF-1.01, lies just 33 light-years away in the constellation of Leo, making it apparently the closest yet found outside our Solar System. It was found by accident by an international team using the Spitzer observatory which is in an Earth-trailing orbit around the Sun.

Mediante il Telescopio Spaziale NASA Spitzer è stato individuato quello che sembra essere un esopianeta “piccolo”, il cui diametro è di circa 8,400 kilometers, 2/3 rispetto alla Terra. Questo pianeta (per il momento ancora ‘pianeta candidato’) si chiama UCF-1.01 e si trova a 33 anni luce da noi. Si tratterebbe del più vicino a noi ad avere tali dimensioni. E’ una scoperta accidentale, avvenuta mentre Spitzer era impegnato in alcune osservazioni di un altro esopianeta già noto, GJ 436b, grande come Nettuno ed in orbita intorno alla nana rossa GJ 436.
