Big sunspot AR1429 has unleashed another major flare. This one is the strongest yet, an X5-class eruption on March 7th at 00:28 UT. This eruption hurled a bright CME into space. First-look data from STEREO-B are not sufficient to determine if the cloud is heading for Earth. Our best guess is “probably, yes, but not directly toward Earth.” A glancing blow to our planet’s magnetosphere is possible on March 8th or 9th. Stay tuned for updates.
GEOMAGNETIC STORM UPDATE: A CME propelled toward Earth by this morning’s X5-class solar flare is expected to reach our planet on March 8th at 0625 UT (+/- 7 hr). Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, who prepared the CME’s forecast track, say the impact could spark a strong-to-severe geomagnetic storm. Sky watchers at all latitudes should be alert for auroras.
Il nuovo e grande spot solare denominato AR1429 è nuovamente in attività dopo l’eruzione registrata nei giorni scorsi. Classificato X5, il nuovo flare registrato nelle prime ore di oggi 7 Marzo, ha rilasciato anch’esso un CME nello spazio. Le prime osservazioni non permettono ancora di sapere con certezza se la nuvola di plasma sia diretta verso la Terra. Gli analisti pensano comunque sia probabile ed in caso, il CME dovrebbe impattare il nostro scudo protettivo l’8 o il 9 Marzo. Seguiranno aggiornamenti in tempo reale.

Gli analisti che stanno seguendo con attenzione l’evolversi della situazione, ipotizzano il verificarsi di tempesta geomagnetica in scala 3 o 4 su 5. Si allertano tutti coloro che amano scrutare il cielo per la possibilità di aurore a tutte le latitudini.
