Lo sciame delle Geminidi, il più interessante dopo quelli di Leonidi e Perseidi, quest’anno si verifica in discrete condizioni osservative dato che il disturbo lunare (la Luna tramonterà verso la mezzanotte) sarà abbastanza limitato.
Il massimo (ZHR = 100) del 2010 è previsto per le ore 6:00 del 14 dicembre. Come particolarità, ricordiamo che questo sciame è associato al residuo di cometa (3200) Phaethon e che dovrebbe essere uno dei più giovani, se non il più giovane in assoluto; sembra infatti che la sua attività meteorica sia stata segnalata solo dopo il 1750 e che già in questi anni la Terra potrebbe non incontrare più la nube di detriti più densa.

Where do you look to see December’s famous Geminid meteor shower? In an open sky, because these meteors fly in many different directions and in front of numerous age-old constellations. However, if you trace the paths of the Geminid meteors backward, they all appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini. But you don’t need to know Gemini to see these meteors, for they streak all over the sky. The 2012 Geminid shower comes on strong around December 12 and 13 every year. In a moon-free sky, you could possibly see as many as 50 meteors per hour in the wee hours after midnight. Fortunately, the new moon guarantees dark skies for the peak nights of the December 2012 Geminid shower. If the forecast holds, the Geminids will be falling most richly on the night of December 13, though the nights of December 12 and 14 should also be good.
