May 29, 2009: An international panel of experts led by NOAA and sponsored by NASA has released a new prediction for the next solar cycle. Solar Cycle 24 will peak, they say, in May 2013 with a below-average number of sunspots.
“If our prediction is correct, Solar Cycle 24 will have a peak sunspot number of 90, the lowest of any cycle since 1928 when Solar Cycle 16 peaked at 78,” says panel chairman Doug Biesecker of the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. It is tempting to describe such a cycle as “weak” or “mild,” but that could give the wrong impression.
“Even a below-average cycle is capable of producing severe space weather,” points out Biesecker. “The great geomagnetic storm of 1859, for instance, occurred during a solar cycle of about the same size we’re predicting for 2013.”

Il risveglio del Sole e probabile tempesta geomagnetica nel 2013.
Nel maggio del 2009 la NASA pubblicò le previsioni dell’attività solare, elaborate dagli esperti dell’apposito organismo predisposto, il NOAA, secondo quanto osservato durante i cicli solari.
Le macchie solari sono sotto stretta osservazione da tempo e da una di queste si prevede una possibile espulsione di massa coronale, detta CME, la quale potrebbe provocare una tempesta geomagnetica di notevole intensità, paragonata a quella registrata nel 1859. Il picco d’attività solare è previsto per il mese di maggio del 2013. Quando si verificò la precedente tempesta solare, nel 1859, il nostro Pianeta non era così dipendente dalla tecnologia, come invece lo è oggi. L’allerta serve allo scopo precauzionale affinchè si sia tutti consapevoli ed operativi nell’organizzarsi per tempo semmai questa tempesta dovesse verificarsi, con il pericolo che possa paralizzare il sistema satellitare e tutti i servizi ad essi collegati sulla Terra.
