Sulla Luna non c’è aria da respirare, non vi è nemmeno una minima brezza che possa far sventolare la bandiera piantata sul suo suolo dalla missione Apollo. Però sulla superficie della Luna c’è un sottilissimo strato gassoso che può essere definito atmosfera. Tecnicamente è considerata una “esosfera”. In una esosfera, i gas sono così diradati che raramente si scontrano tra loro. Sono un po’come microscopiche palle di cannone che volano senza incontrare ostacoli ne curve, rimbalzando sulla superficie lunare. Nell’atmosfera lunare ci sono solo 100 molecole per centimetro cubo. In confronto, l’atmosfera terrestre, al livello del mare, è di circa 100 miliardi di miliardi di molecole per centimetro cubo. La massa totale di questi gas è di circa 55.000 libbre (25.000 kg), circa lo stesso peso di un camion carico.
On the moon, there’s no air to breathe, no breezes to make the flags planted there by the Apollo missions flutter. However, there is a very, very thin layer of gases on the lunar surface that can almost be called an atmosphere. Technically, it’s considered an exosphere. In an exosphere, the gases are so spread out that they rarely collide with one another. They are rather like microscopic cannon balls flying unimpeded on curved, ballistic trajectories and bouncing across the lunar surface. In the moon’s atmosphere, there are only 100 molecules per cubic centimeter. In comparison, Earth’s atmosphere at sea level has about 100 billion billion molecules per cubic centimeter. The total mass of these gases is about 55,000 pounds (25,000 kilograms), about the same weight as a loaded dump truck.
