Il Premio 2012 agli studi sull’ottica quantistica
Deluse le attese di chi si aspettava un premio legato alla scoperta del bosone di Higgs al CERN. A Stoccolma scelgono David Wineland e Serge Haroche, per studi che contribuiscono al sogno del quantum computing. Per Roberto Battiston (INFN) è un premio meritato, ma in futuro il Nobel dovrà trovare un modo di riconoscere anche il lavoro dei grandi progetti.
Niente Higgs, a differenza di quello che qualcuno si aspettava e che qualcuno persino sperava. Il Premio Nobel per la Fisica 2012 non è andato né al fisico inglese che quasi mezzo secolo fa descrisse il bosone che conferisce la massa alle altre particelle, né tantomeno ai leader degli esperimenti che quest’anno ne hanno confermato l’esistenza. A ricevere il premio sono invece l’americano David Wineland e il francese Serge Haroche. Con il loro lavoro, rispettivamente all’Università del Colorado a Boulder e all’Ecole Normale Supérieure di Parigi, hanno dato contributi fondamentale all’ottica quantistica, ovvero lo studio delle interazioni tra la radiazione elettromagnetica e la materia a scala subatomica.

Why the Higgs Boson Didn’t Win This Year’s Nobel
In the days leading up to today’s (Oct. 9) announcement of the 2012 Nobel Prize in physics, speculation was rampant that the discovery of the Higgs boson particle would be rewarded this year. This summer, particle physicists at the world’s largest atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), announced they’d finally found what looks to be the Higgs boson after decades of searches have turned up nothing. Recently, rumors started flying that the 2012 Nobel would reward either the teams responsible for the discovery, or the scientists who predicted the particle’s existence almost 50 years ago.
Today, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that this year’s Nobel in physics was awarded to French physicist Serge Haroche and American physicist David Wineland for their pioneering work in quantum optics — the study of the fundamental interaction between light and matter.
